WELL
we are happy with our Sera heaters...
wattage you should use depends on
room temp and water temp you want in tank
average room temp, in average aquarium I'd get a 200 watt for a 75 g tank
so
if you are doing a discus tank (84 degrees F)
in a room you keep cold (turning thermostat down to 65 degrees F)
then
you need a BIG heater...guessing 250 watts or more
but
if you are doing a regular community tank (77 degrees F)
in a room you keep warm (thermostat at 71 degrees F)
you probably only need a 150 watt heater or maybe 200
in general
I like to go slightly less watts...
it is more dangerous to over heat than under heat...
hot water does not hold oxygen as well as cool water
I happen to know
114 degrees is a fatal High for discus
I happen to know
84 degrees is a fatal high for Corydoras Barbatus, but not some other Corys
I happen to know
46 degrees is a fatal Low for bushynose Plecos
I happen to know
82 degrees is fatal to some small polyp stony Corals (SPS)
always a good idea to add an air pump to any aquarium
but particularly an aquarium you keep very warm
a tightly covered tank
is usually
the same temp as the room
an uncovered tank is usually
2 degrees lower than room temp
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
rules of thumb temps we try to use at the store
goldfish, koi, white cloud mountain minnows: NO heater
discus and some special eartheaters: 83 degrees
saltwater tanks: 75 degrees
general community tropical tanks: 77 degrees
adult Malawi cichlids: 72 degrees
