Ok, so what does it mean when clown loaches start hiding and refusing to show themselves?

I have 2 medium sized clown loaches in my 30 gal. tank that have always been out and about playing any time I looked in. Last week I brought home a few new fish (2 additional SAEs, nothing new there, and 1 sparkling gourami, who also seems to hide more than he is out). Around that time I noticed that I couldn't find the loaches! I kept watching for them and they will come out during feedings (sometimes only one of them) and occasionally I will see one or two of them out in the morning before the lights go on.

The only other time they went into hiding was when they had ick. However, that was more of a run and hide when they spotted you looking at them then come back out when you left. Now when they make an appearance I try to examine them carefully and I see no sign of anything wrong.

Does anyone know if they have some sort of romantic season where they hide out in caves for lots of alone time or something?

Could they be scared of the sparkling gourami? They are much bigger than the gourami so I wouldn't think they would care about it.

I suggest you put more floating plants in the tank
(either fake or real)
and also get more loaches
(2 is not a school)

maybe put a background on the tank
