feeding koi in the spring
In my opinion,
you should start feeding the Koi when your water is 55 degrees F.
From temperature 55-65 feed spring-autumn formula
or wheat germ formula koi foods.
Above 65, feed
color, growth or staple formula Koi foods.
The cheaper the food is
the more air, ash (ash is useless, but harmles) and oats it will have...
the more expensive the food is
the more shrimp, wheat, and vitamins it will have.
If you want your fish to really grow,
you are probably better off with a smaller pellet than a larger pellet.
(even big fish will eat small pellets.)
Right now my favorite Koi Foods are Dainichi & Omega Sea...
but frankly,
they'll eat anything (they like Cheerios & Sweet potatoes).
The biggest Koi I ever heard of were feed raw rice (right out of the gunny sack.)
Koi have grinding teeth way back in their mouths.
There are 2 reasons you shouldn't feed Koi when it is cold...
they don't properly digest
and
filter bacteria that breaks down waste won't grow in the cold.
Goldfish are colder water fish.
If your pond is Goldfish-only you can start feeding lightly
at about 45 degrees F.
