I was wondering how many watts do i need per gallon for a tank with live rock? i have a 29 gallon setup and it looks like the rock is turning white especially the purple coralline algae any suggestions?

i have marine-glo and power-glo running rite now, both 20W bulbs. are they the same thing as teh actinic and the full spectrum?

your rock is not dying
the purple corraline on your rock is receding
it will grow back

here's what you need to grow purple coraline algae:
>saltwater (above 1.021 on hydrometer)
>flow (more the better)
>any ammount of actinic light (your marine-glo IS an actinic light...it's best if it's changed every 10 months)
>good alkalinity (ability of water to hold high pH) and pH above 8.3
>kalkwasser OR liquid calcium (frequent small additions are better than seldom large additions)
>nitrAte below 40 ppm (this is why we usually do NOT use filter media like sponges or bio-balls in the filters on reef tanks)
>moderate temperature (below 77 degrees F is best)

I'll bet your fish and critters are fine
you just need to take steps to make sure above 7 issues are correct
